City Council Wrap-Up – May 29, 2018
Tucker’s Mayor and City Council met Monday for the final time in the month of May, holding public hearings on several issues dealing with land use in the City.
The first hearing, on a rezoning for a furniture distribution warehouse on Sarr Parkway, was granted a deferral at the applicant’s request. The applicant for the second case, a 15-unit residential development along Cooledge Road, also requested and was granted a deferral. Both those petitions are scheduled now for a second read and vote on June 27.
Council voted 6-0 to approve a special land use permit (SLUP), with conditions, that will formally allow the Warrior Body Spa to relocate from its former location on Lavista Road to its new home on Brockett Road. They then voted 6-0 to approve a SLUP for a mixed-use, 245-unit multi-family development on Northlake Parkway. This will be situated across from the Tucker Meridian Shopping Center on the site of the soon-to-be shuttered Northlake Inn.
Earlier in the meeting, Council voted 6-0 to approve an amendment to the City Charter dealing with the “two-member veto” provision. Under the original provision, if two Council members from a particular district voted against a land use case anywhere in the City, the case was automatically denied. With this amendment, the “two-member veto” now will only apply to land use cases in the district of those two members voting in opposition.
An amendment to the City code pertaining to alcohol passed by a 6-0 vote. That amendment primarily functions to bring Tucker’s alcohol code more into alignment with the state standard. Council also approved an annexation petition by the property owner at 4090 Livsey Road. The vote takes that residential property out of Unincorporated DeKalb and brings it into the City of Tucker.
The Mayor and Council also voted to appoint Judi Crutchfield to the vacant District One seat on Tucker’s Community Council.
The next City Council meeting is scheduled for June 11 at 7 p.m. at the City Hall Annex (4228 First Avenue).
