Ask Rip – April 2019

Rip Robertson is the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Tucker.

For this month’s column, I want to highlight some events we have coming up and one that is ongoing.

First, I want to say thank you to all who showed up to the kickoff event for our “Lead the Pack” initiative on March 16. We had 30 folks sign a pledge promising to keep their pets leashed while enjoying our Tucker parks and encouraging their neighbors to do the same. As I mentioned, this was just the start. You can go to tuckerga.gov/parks to print off and sign the pledge. If you’ll bring it to Tucker Recreation Center, our staff has a free City of Tucker leash to give you.

Secondly, our Parks staff wanted to make sure that families sticking around town for Spring Break had some opportunities to get out and have fun. That’s why we’ve organized a Photo Scavenger Hunt in Henderson Park (April 1), a Trail Mix Hike in Smoke Rise Park (April 3) and a free youth basketball clinic in Peters Park (April 6). We hope you can join us for one, or all, of these fun, free activities.

Finally, if you haven’t made plans to send the kids to Summer Camp yet, I hope you’ll consider giving our Tucker Recreation Center camp a chance. I’m proud to say the Mayor and City Council approved keeping registration prices static, meaning you’ll pay the same $95 per week this summer that you did last summer. We’ve also done a lot of analysis of what went right and what could be improved from last summer. Two of the big changes you’ll see this summer will be more swim time for campers when we go to Kelley Cofer Park pool and more engaging activities on a day-to-day basis, specifically STEM-related activities that keep our students thinking. I’m proud of the groundwork we’ve laid for this year’s camp and hope you’ll go to our website and sign up today!
