Fitzgerald Park Renovation

Fitzgerald Park Renovation

Overview

Project Overview

The City of Tucker acquired Fitzgerald Park in 2019. The need for a sports complex was listed in our initial Parks and Recreation Master plan adopted in 2018. This park serves as the city’s sports complex with 1 football field (practice/games), 1 multipurpose turf field, a multipurpose natural field and 2 baseball fields, 2 concession facilities and restrooms on all fields. There is new parking with improved accessibility throughout the park with sidewalks and natural walking areas. A new playground will be added in 2025 with grant funding through DeKalb County (CDBG).  The Parks department maintenance facility was relocated to Fitzgerald Park.

DESCRIPTION:

The initial phase of this project was to upgrade the existing water and sewer system. This required complete replacement of the water main within the park and tying into the existing sewer system with new lines. This phase was completed in the summer of 2023 and full renovation of the park began immediately. The second phase included new entrance/exit drives with an improved stormwater system, additional parking, a new concession facility, a turfed multipurpose field and new LED lighting on all fields.

OBJECTIVES:
  • Create an updated sports complex for the city’s growing youth and adult sports leagues, possible district, state, and regional sports tournaments.
  • Expand the parking for the city’s sports complex with improved access.
  • Provide the surrounding neighborhoods with a walkable, family friendly park.
  • Build and improve the park maintenance facility to provide our maintenance crews with a safe and workable site.
  • Improve stormwater controls and runoff.

Timeline UPDATE (March 21, 2025):

There are some small additions and improvements to be made that will not interrupt the use of this fantastic City facility. We are adding new bleachers with a press box to the turf field and demolishing the condemned building on field four to make way for expanding that field to a multi-use play area. The City has been awarded a DeKalb County (CDBG) grant for a new inclusive playground as well.
