Citizen of the Month – Camille Mahdi
I would like to nominate Camille Mahdi for July’s Citizen of the month. Camille is a resident of Tucker and from the get-go has immersed herself in serving the community in many ways. Her passion for helping and entertaining the Tucker community runs deep and she has dedicated much of her spare time to coming up with innovative ways to bring joy to Tucker.
Camille is a member of several volunteer organizations that serve the community, and she always finds a way to say “Yes! Let’s make it happen!”. Not long after Main Street Theatre was created, Camille found a way to get involved. She had a major role in the Spring 2019 production of Four Weddings and an Elvis. Camille’s personality came alive on the stage and was a scene stealer at times! She is returning to MST this fall as the producer of Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming, the final installment of the Saunders Family story.
In 2019 Camille formed Citizens for Family Activities in Tucker, LLC as a vehicle to create new and fun events throughout Tucker. CFATucker was able to get in one event before COVID affected all gatherings. On December 31, 2019, Camille presented a New Year’s Eve festival offering live music, bounce houses, a game truck and science exhibits, all at an affordable price. There was even an early “countdown to midnight” for the little ones so that regular bedtimes could be honored. In 2021, Camille expanded the event to include carnival rides and more live bands!
Camille was a natural choice when discussions about a Juneteenth festival started up. In her typical fashion Camille replied yes and went all in. Tucker’s inaugural Juneteenth Jubilee was a huge success! It started with a community Unity Walk down Main Street and followed with a gathering at the new Church Street greenspace. It was a day of live musical performances, an active kid zone, vendors and speakers from Tucker and DeKalb County. Camille, her organization CFATucker, LLC and the Tucker community shone that day.
Camille has also been very involved with the Tucker Optimist Club and currently serves as the chapter’s President. The Optimist Club is an international network of volunteers with hyperlocal chapters with the mission of “…providing hope and positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in youth, our communities and ourselves.” Camille takes that mission to heart with everything in which she endeavors, and Tucker is beyond blessed to have her as a resident and passionate volunteer.
