Team Tucker Spotlight – Jason Collins, Parks & Rec Operations Mgr
How did you become interested in a career in Parks and Recreation?
I studied Political Science with an emphasis in Public Policy in school, so I always thought I would have some sort of position in government. I realized that I would not be able to do a typical desk job because I loved being outdoors, so I chose the best of both worlds in Parks and Recreation.
What are the primary responsibilities for an Operations Manager?
My primary responsibilities are to make sure that all the parks are kept clean and maintained. I am responsible for the new playgrounds going into the parks, as well as making sure that all improvements to the parks are aligned with the focus that our new Parks Master Plan has. I work very closely with the different Friends groups that each park has and I try my best to help them be successful.
What are some of the biggest changes you’ve had a hand in during your year here in Tucker?
I have applied for – and received – a grant to replace every playground in the Tucker parks. Many playgrounds are already completed. I have helped a great deal with the new Parks Master Plan and the required public input that it has entailed. I have worked to bring the Friends groups for each individual park onboard to work with the City and with Park Pride.
What should people know about the future of Tucker’s parks?
The future of Tucker’s parks is very bright. We have already started tons of upgrades to the parks with so many more to come.
What is your favorite park amenity anywhere in the City of Tucker?
My favorite amenity in all the parks is the trail system. I am constantly amazed at how many trails are in the Tucker parks. I’m embarrassed to say that I have been lost more than once.
Off The Wall
What was the last book you read?
I last read “The Outsiders” by Stephen King. I read this because they filmed an HBO series about this at the Tucker Recreation Center.
What is your greatest fear?
Snakes. I can’t handle the sight of them.
Which character from “Parks and Recreation” are you most similar to?
I have never actually watched the show, so honestly I couldn’t tell you.
If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy?
The first thing I would buy, after a great lawyer and financial planner, would be a trip around Europe.
