Citizen of the Month – Matt Holmes
Just like with anything here at the City of Tucker, there are internal policies about who may be nominated for Citizen of the Month. No person holding an elected seat, appointee of any board or commission or city staff member may receive this prestigious honor. Should one of those listed leave their seat or position then it is fair game. It is also an internal policy that electeds and staff members may not nominate anyone for Citizen of the Month, but sometimes rules need to bend.
As mentioned earlier in this issue, the City’s former Communications Director has moved on from serving the Tucker community. He brought the City fireworks, a two-time award-winning magazine and countless informative videos. He also added strong leadership and humor to the workday. That is why it is with bittersweet pleasure that the Communications Department nominates Matt Holmes as May’s Citizen of the Month.
Matt created the Communications Department over five years ago when the City itself was in its infancy. Bright eyed and fresh, Matt had a vision of delivering informative transparency to Tucker’s residents. Within months of joining Team Tucker, Matt launched the City’s first newsletter. It started as six pages then grew to eight. After two years, he expanded it to a full 16-page magazine that went on to win two national awards. He oversaw a major website redesign, created several video series including Tucker Cares, Ribbon Cutters and the first Economic Development video, used to promote Tucker and encourage companies to relocate and grow here in the City. When COVID hit, Matt pivoted and educated the community on safety standards and made wearing masks look fun! And during that time of community separation he brainstormed and figured out how to bring the Spring Prom to the Seniors at THS virtually as well as the annual Firework Extravaganza.
In addition to being a creative genius, Matt was a committed leader. His staff knew that he was reliable and forthright, strong with high expectations, yet approachable and understanding. Matt made sure that all of staff were entertained during the holiday parties with rousing competitions of karaoke, holiday trivia and the revered Tuck Awards.
Matt poured himself into Tucker, its residents and staff, and he will be missed around City Hall.
Don’t be a stranger Matt…see you around Tucker!
