City Council Wrap Up - November 27, 2023

Mayor introduces new staff members.Tucker, GA (November 27, 2023). The second City Council meeting of November was called to order at 7 p.m. as a regular business meeting. The Mayor introduced three new staff members and announced John McHenry as his appointment for City Manager. John has served the City of Tucker since its inception in a variety of positions including Community and Economic Development Director, Assistant City Manager and Deputy City Manager. The City contracted a renowned recruiting firm to conduct a nationwide search and guide the Mayor and Council through the process.

The first part of the evening consisted of three presentations from staff. Public Works Director Ishri Sankar presented the proposed plan for stormwater maintenance extent of service concerning all structures, conduits and ponds built in public right of way or real property owned by the City. He then presented and answered questions on the proposed traffic calming policy that had a first read on November 13. The Council will vote in December on the qualifying process, and the budget for installation will be included in the next budget year. Community Development Director Courtney Smith then presented on a possible text amendment to the code concerning invasive weeds like kudzu, English ivy and wisteria.

The Council then moved forward with approvals of two contracts and a resolution. Mayor and Council approved a contract for the Juliette Road Resurfacing and Safety Improvements Project with a unanimous vote. This was followed by another unanimous vote for the approval of a contract for the E. Ponce de Leon Avenue Sidewalk Project. The third item was a resolution of the City Council of Tucker to authorize the city attorney to acquire one part of a parcel of commercial property to redesign Richardson Street. This will add a second ingress and egress to a neighborhood that houses almost 5,000 residents to provide better safety and access.

Mayor and Council then recessed to executive session at 8:24. They returned to no action and voted to adjourn the meeting at 8:57 p.m.
